The Eyes Have It!

This is my first golf column for Visions of Canada on the Vision Fore Golfing website, so I am going to relate to the readers a little bit of what I know about the importance of the eyes relative to golf.

What I learned from my Dad as a little boy was this. Keep your eye on the ball.  He illustrated this by intentionally teeing the ball way too high so that if you swung relative to the ground, you would "pop the ball up."  By teeing the ball 3 inches higher than normal, I was forced to swing and hit the ball, not swing relative to the ground.

My Dad told me that if he held a ball by a string and held it waist high, you still should be able to hit the ball if you look at it.  When I won the Michigan Open and the Michigan Senior Open in the same year (2003), the last thought before I hit the ball was "see the ball on the downswing."

When I won the Michigan High School Championship in 1971 I intentionally teed the ball too high with my driver to force myself to keep my eye on the ball.  I remember on the last hole I took my eye off the ball and , sure enough, I popped it up.

Keeping your eye on the ball is so basic that it is surely overlooked.  The next little bit of info about the eyes comes from Mac O'Grady who did a golf school at my academy a couple of years ago.

He said that the two most important things to learn about the swing was the "eyes" and the center of gravity.  He emphasized that you must keep both eyes, (not just one eye,) on the ball.

If you lose sight of the ball with one or both eyes, it sabotages proprioception. Proprioception is the bodies three dimensional awareness of itself moving in space.  You must keep both eyes on the ball during the swing.  For those of you who don't know who Mac O'Grady is, in my opinion, he knows more about golf than anyone, period.  Why, because I have never known anyone who has studied it more thoroughly than he has.  Having him at my academy for 4 1/2 days was an unbelievable experience.  More on that in future articles.
